I started photographing dogs 14 years ago because of two Dobermans who changed my life.

 

​Cain, who was a rescue and came to me unsure of the world, gentle and cautious, and slowly taught me patience, trust, and connection. We spent every single day together and he became my best friend.

​

Then came Rieker, my first puppy. Expressive, loyal, and full of personality. Together, they were the dogs that made me pick up a camera for the first time. They’ve both passed away, but the portraits I made of them remain the most meaningful artwork I own.

 

Losing them showed me how powerful a single image can be. How it can hold presence, memory, and emotion long after the moment is gone. That experience shaped everything about my work today.

 

I've owned and lived with Dobermans for a decade and a half and currently share my home with two of them. Arlo & Nora.

 

You don't need to be a canine specialist, a veterinary technician or even a dog whisperer to understand dogs. But, when you're specifically hiring a dog photographer (especially for sport/working breeds), find one who genuinely understands them and has owned them.

Someone who understands drive, focus, excitement, nerves, and how to work with powerful working breeds, not just small dogs.

 

Because knowing photography is one thing.

 

Knowing dogs is another. It's what creates great dog portraits.

 

As a longtime Doberman owner, I have a particular appreciation for working breeds. These dogs are intelligent, driven, and full of character. They deserve more than a photographer asking them to sit and smile. I prefer to work with them on their terms, allowing their confidence, focus, and personality to naturally come through in every portrait.
